Frequently Asked Question
If you have installed FactSage server installation on a network folder path and requested a server password file from us, then the server password will fail to activate your FactSage server installation.
The problem here is that the FactSage server installation path at your end is an external network drive mapped locally to the server PC, example "\\Samba-Shares\Software\FactSage\FS83" mapped to drive X: (or any other driver letter) which is not allowed. The installation of FactSage server must be on a shared-folder on the local drive and not on the network drive.
Refer to the FactSage 8.3 Installation instructions page for more details.
To proceed and rectify the error, first uninstall and delete the FactSage server version that you currently installed as it will not work. You would have to do a complete reinstallation and you have two ways to do this:
- If the network location "\\Samba-Shares\" is a Windows-PC and not exposed to the internet but only visible on the LAN as a server, then install FactSage 8.3 server version by logging in locally on this PC and perform a local installation at the path "\Software\FactSage\FS83" like before and generate the ID.txt from that PC.
If this is not a Windows PC but a LINUX or NAS -SAMBA share and/or this is an externally accessible machine over the internet, then omit this step and perform the next option. - If you would like to use the current server PC from where you had generated the ID.txt, the uninstall the current FactSage 8.3 installation completely and do a re-installation on a folder on the local HDD, that is shared over the LAN.
To do this:- Login as a Windows administrator on the PC (example PC name "FSServer") designated to act as a FS server and create a shared-folder called C:\NetworkShare for example, and share the newly created NetworkShare folder on the LAN and make it accessible in read-only mode to external LAN users. It is important that you create a folder that doesn't have spaces or non-ASCII characters in the folder name and it is on the top-level partitions on the HDD... C:\ or D:\ etc.
- Make sure that the LAN is a trusted network for the PC and that the Windows file and printer sharing is turned on, on the FactSage and client PCs over this LAN.
- Next run FactSage 8.3 installer under Administrator account and install FactSage 8.3 in a separate folder under the shared folder NetworkShare created in the earlier step, example C:\NetworkShare\FactSage83
- Once the installation finishes, generate a new ID.txt and send to us again for a new FactSage.ini server password generation.
- The client PCs should be able to find the shared-folder from this PC on the lan, as "\\FSServer\NetworkShare\FactSage83" and should map it to a drive letter and then begin the FactSage 8.3 client installation as described in the installation instructions.
You should be able to then generate a new ID.txt file and request a new server password from us.
